Organisers of the Gold Coast Music Awards today announced their categories and opened nominations.

Chloe Popa is one of the team responsible for bringing the awards to fruition and also co-owner of Blank GC. She said the concept had received overwhelming support from the Gold Coast’s music industry.

“We’ve had an active industry advisory panel give us advice about the categories and nomination process, we’ve been inundated with offers of support and prizes and interest on the website and social media has been significant,” she said.

“We’re thrilled to finally open nominations,” she said.

There are six categories, none of which are genre based, and a People’s Choice Award which will be chosen by popular vote.

The six categories are:

  • Song of the Year
  • Band / Artist of the Year (sponsored by Cabana Bar & Lounge)
  • Emerging Artist of the Year (sponsored by Griffith University)
  • Live Music Event of the Year
  • Live Music Venue of the Year
  • Local Music Champion of the Year

“Choosing just six categories was a challenge,” Chloe said. “But we wanted to set ourselves something achievable, and we think these categories cover most of the music industry here on the Gold Coast.”

As well as an industry advisory panel, organisers have recruited an independent judging panel. Trevor Jackson (ABC Gold Coast) will chair the panel and other members include Leesa Gentz and Julz Parker (Hussy Hicks), Louise Bezzina (Bleach Festival), Neil Beattie (Swingin’ Safari) and Sean Flanagan (Hot Tomato).

Nominations for the Gold Coast Music Awards open Wednesday 15 April and close Sunday 31 May and all documents, including guidelines and supporting information as well as nomination forms are available online.

The awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday 22 July at Burleigh Brewing Co. and tickets are on sale now.

Burleigh Brewing Co. has come on board as a presenting partner, with other sponsors including Griffith University’s SEED Program, Southport Sharks Cabana Bar & Lounge, City of Gold Coast, Swell Sculpture Festival, Elsewhere and Pollination. Additional partners are being announced next week.

The event has also secured ABC Gold Coast and Liquify Magazine as media partners.
